Halal Market Report
Week of
Oct 19–25, 2026
What moved this week
- Romaine tripled in three weeks, and it isn't done. Salinas 24s went from $18.55–21.75 on Sept 28 to mostly $67.75–69.90 on Friday, another 20% over last week's $55.75–58.45. Hearts 12x3 are mostly $69.75–72.75. Santa Maria, last week's cheap buy, jumped to mostly $40.55–42.55, with hearts at $50.55–52.35. The problem is in the fields: light weights, tip burn, high core, insects and INSV. Suppliers are warning of prorates, so expect short-filled orders, not just higher invoices.
- Swapping lettuces won't save you. Swapping origins will. Salinas green leaf ($60.55–63.75), red leaf, Boston and iceberg ($69.75–72.55) are priced right alongside romaine. The relief is closer to home: at Hunts Point on Friday, Ontario romaine was $20–22 and New York green leaf $14–16. California romaine was still $40–42 there, but that's well under the $68-plus shipping-point market and unlikely to last. First Arizona quotes are expected around Nov 1, with the full desert transition around Nov 16–23, so plan on about five more weeks: ask your rep for Canadian or local product, lighten romaine portions, and hold salad prices only if you've done both. No active romaine recall as of Friday.
- Tomatoes jumped. Mexico vine ripes went from mostly $26–28 on Oct 13 to $35–38.95 on Friday, and East Tennessee mature greens from $25.35 to $35.35. California greens are mostly finished, and Georgia and Florida are about three weeks out. Expect tight supply until then.
- Cheese ripped higher. The cheap window is closing. CME blocks rallied 29.75¢ on the week to $1.6825, up from a six-year low of $1.2750 on Sept 29. Barrels rose 16.75¢ to $1.62. Last week the call flipped to buy; this week, lock mozzarella and shred contracts before the rally reaches your invoice. Butter bounced 9¢ to $1.365 off its Oct 8 low of $1.25, the lowest since February 2021, and is still cheap.
- Beef rounds eased; chicken thighs ran again. Choice inside round 168 fell $7.07 to $371.42 and outside round 171B fell $7.30 to $384.23, even as October live cattle added another $2.58 to $227.55. That's a breather, not a trend: buy what you need, don't build inventory on it. Boneless thighs jumped 5.4¢ to 173.3¢, now 56¢ over breast at 116.9¢, the best-value boneless cut on the board.
